Zairmail Uses Xerox Technology to Create Its Mail On Demand Service

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nov. 10, 2000 - Zairmail, Inc., a privately held company funded by both venture capital and private investors, today announced it is working with Xerox Corporation to create the first large-scale distributed Mail-on-Demand (MoD) system.

Zairmail will use Xerox distributed global print production and insertion sites in North America to enable Zairmail customers -- businesses, political organizations and consumers -- to send postal mail overnight via desktop computers.

Zairmail's relationship with Xerox creates the infrastructure to bridge the digital divide between Internet and offline communications" said Wilson Zehr, CEO of Zairmail." Direct mail campaigns that typically take several weeks can be produced online in a matter of hours and in many cases, delivered overnight using first-class postal mail services.

Zairmail has capitalized upon an overlooked opportunity: business and consumer print communications between online and offline customers," said Mike Massey, vice president in Xerox Business Services, a global leader in document outsourcing services."As these groups converge, companies like Zairmail are finding that Xerox provides the best digital printing technology and services to complement their goals.”

Zairmail’s MoD system allows electronic content to be routed across the Internet to a nearby printing and delivery location. Zairmail submits the print jobs to the appropriate Xerox facility, Xerox prints the required job on high-speed color or black-and-white digital printers, and then presents the finished job to the postal service for next-day delivery.

Zairmail develops and utilizes the proprietary patent-pending software systems essential to creating MoD targeting the burgeoning print-on-demand marketplace. The ultimate goal of Zairmail is to reach more than 80 percent of the U.S. population with overnight mail delivery, and further expand this vision internationally beginning in 2001.
